Kani weaving is one of Kashmir’s most distinctive textile traditions. The patterns are not printed or embroidered onto the shawl — they are woven directly into the fabric using small wooden sticks, known as kanis, on a traditional handloom. Different coloured threads are carefully worked into the weave to create the intricate designs.

The result is a stole with remarkable detail, colour and character. Kani shawls have a long history in Indian textile artistry and remain one of the best-known examples of Kashmiri handloom craftsmanship.
